Today, our children in F1 and F2 had a very special visit from our school's Reading Ambassadors. They came and shared a story, we did really good listening and then we did lots of talking about the characters, plot and favourite parts of the story. The children really enjoyed it and we cannot wait for the next visit from the Reading Ambassadors! During our outdoor play this week, we have been exploring and investigating weather. (Up to now, we have had lots of different weather - sun, wind and rain and snow is also on the forecast!) Today it was very wet and windy! We used our pin wheels to see how windy it was - we noticed that the pin wheel spun really fast when it was windy and stopped when the wind calmed. This morning the children created their very own rain gauges and in the afternoon we tipped the rain gauges out and measured how much rain had fallen. The children then wanted to find the total of all their rain gauges and we measured 100ml of rain water collected from all of the children's rain gauges. We were curious about clouds and rain, so we looked on the internet and found the water cycle. We talked about how the puddles on the floor are evaporated (we don't see this happening because it is a gas), water droplets make the clouds, the wind moves the clouds and when there are lots of water droplets it rains! The children then carried out their very own rain cloud in a jar experiment. We used a jar, shaving foam and coloured water. The children squirted the coloured water in to the shaving foam (cloud) and watched it fill the cloud and then flow into the water below. During our outdoor play, the children created a hot chocolate café in our sand area. We made recipes and menus using our phonic knowledge and helped others, including our F1 children, to follow the recipe instructions to make their very own hot chocolate, cakes and other yummy treats. Before home time, the children shared what we had been up to outside and this sparked the interest in making our very own hot chocolate drink. Through shared writing, we made a shopping list and recipe for the children to follow the next day. The very next day (Friday) we had the ingredients and recipe to make our very own hot chocolate drink. We talked about staying safe when using the warm milk and hot water and followed the instructions very, very carefully. Our hot chocolate drinks were a big success and very tasty treat to have on a cold day. |
