Attendance
At Athersley South we believe that regular attendance is important to a child's success and we aim to work with parents and carers to ensure that the attendance of all pupils is the best it can be. Attendance and achievement are closely linked and good habits, developed early in life do have an impact on levels of achievement. We follow National and Local guidelines to help monitor and improve attendance at our school and operate a number of initiatives to celebrate and reward good attendance.
During whole school assembly on a Friday a power point is shared with pupils and parents to show attendance figures for all classes with a particular emphasis on recognising attendance over 95% and those in line with our target of 97%.Termly certificates are awarded to those children who achieve 100% attendance/above our school and ECM Trust target of 97% and all parents receive a termly attendance report for their child.
Where the attendance of any child is a cause for concern our PSA, Jade Smith and Education Welfare Officer, David Scarth work closely with families to identify and address any issues impacting on attendance.
If pupils are ill, parents/carers are expected to telephone the school before 9.30am on the first day of absence. If this does not happen our PSA will telephone or text home to ascertain the reason for absence. If this is unsuccessful, a letter will be sent home to request this information. If a reason is not supplied following this letter the absence will be recorded as unauthorised.
The Health Protection Agency issue guidance to schools and other childcare settings recommending the actions to be taken to prevent the spread of infection e.g. recommended periods to be kept away from school.
