What do Governors do?
School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the head teacher and deputy headteacher. It is governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and it is governors who work with the headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.
Each individual governor is a member of a governing board, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing board; decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing board. The Chairperson and Vice Chairperson are:

The role of the governing board is a strategic one, its key functions are to:

The Governing Body has established a number of committees to which it delegates day to day responsibility for the oversight of various aspects of the running of the school. The main committees are:
Finance Committee
Initial oversight and management of the annual budget drawn up by the school; Ensures the school maintains an appropriate system of internal financial control; Agrees priorities for revenue and capital funding.
The Chairperson is Mrs Kath Bostwick
Curriculum and Staffing Committee
Ensures the school offers a broad and balanced curriculum in accordance with the National Curriculum; Provides strategic advice and guidance on staffing and personnel issues; Reviews proposals for the promotion of staff.

Buildings and Maintenance Committee
Oversight of the management and maintenance of the school premises; Reviews proposals for capital projects and ensures best practice in procurement and implementation of works; Provides advice and guidance on premises maintenance issues; Lead responsibility for Health & Safety and monitoring of associated statutory requirements (eg Fire safety, Legionella etc).

School Improvement Strategy Group
Reviews progress against the agreed improvement plan and the deployment of the school’s resources to meet identified needs; Review the impact of improvement strategies on outcomes for pupils and the quality of learning and teaching across the school.

- set the aims and objectives for the school
- set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
- set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
- monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
- be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)
