Our morning children had  a go at making up their own story based on our book of the week called Jack and the Beanstalk. We changed the characters and some of the story to make up our own called Jacob, Lucy and the Sausage Beanstalk in Space. Jacob and Lucy lived with their mummy, daddy and a chicken called Spiderwoman in a caravan. Their magic beans grew a sausage beanstalk which they climbed in to space! There was a sad alien who had no friends and only one shoe. Jacob and Lucy became his friends and helped him find his lost shoes. They all lived happily ever after in the end. I wonder what crazy stories you could come up with at home?
To match our story we had a go at planting our own beans. Who knows, they might even grow our own magic beanstalks!

The children were amazing in their sing-a-long performance and we hope that all the grown-ups enjoyed it too. 

We also had a very special visit from Father Christmas and his Elves, it was so exciting to see him arrive in style! All the children told Father Christmas what they would like and was gifted a present. In the afternoon, we had an amazing time eating our party food and had lots of fun at our party. 

We hope you all have a lovely break and enjoy quality time with your families. We look forward to seeing you all again in the new year.

We have talked about when we should wear different clothing and how we use it to keep our bodies warm in the cold weather. While exploring outside, we had an idea that warm food and drinks can help keep us warm too. The children loved making their very own hot chocolate, following instructions and noticing the changes when combining the powder and warm milk.

They asked us lots of questions on how we already look after our teeth and shared some important information on what we should do in the future. Then we all had a turn at showing our special visitors how we need to brush our teeth.

]]><![CDATA[Pumpkin Soup....the best you ever tasted!]]>Thu, 17 Oct 2024 00:00:00 GMThttps://www.athersleysouth-primary.co.uk/eyfs-blog/pumpkin-soupthe-best-you-ever-tastedWe have really enjoyed listening and exploring the story 'Pumpkin Soup' in our Book Talk sessions and finding out about pumpkins. We loved looking inside and feeling the different textures as well as looking at the life cycle of a pumpkin. Today the children have helped to prepare their very own Pumpkin Soup. We separated the seeds, chopped the pulp, added oil, salt and seasoning before cooking and blending. The children observed the changes and noticed that once the water and pumpkin had been blended, the pumpkin went from a solid to a liquid. 

We then tried the soup while listening to our story. The children had not tried Pumpkin soup before so this was a new experience for us all. Some children really enjoyed their soup, some did not like the taste and some children said we needed to add more salt. 

The next day during our shared writing activity, we created our very own Pumpkin Soup recipe. The children did really well to remember all the steps that we took to create our very own pumpkin soup.

Ruby's Worry by Tom Percival 
Key vocabulary:
Explore - means to look around a place carefully
Discover/discovered - means that you find something or find something out
Wondered - means to think about something
Enormous - means very large in size
Barely - means hardly at all or only just about
Unexpected - means surprising
Shrink - means to get smaller
Tumble - When something ‘tumbles’ it means  falls and rolls around

Key vocabulary:
Squabbling (squabble, squabbled) -means to argue about silly or small things
Towering (tower, towered) -means very tall, taller than most things around you
Squealed (squeal, squealing) -A ‘squeal’ is a long, high cry.
Gathered (gather, gathering) -means to bring together
Convinced (convince, convincing) -means to be totally sure about something
Sprinted (sprint, sprinting) -means to run as fast as you can over a short distance.
Hollered (holler, hollering) -To ‘holler’ is to give a loud shout or cry
Scurried (scurry, scurrying) -means moved fast with short, quick steps.


Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper

Murmured – means a quiet sound / word / conversation

Our Book Talk sessions focus on each text over two weeks. Within this time, we really get to know the story, characters and problem. We develop our understanding of the key vocabulary and use this within our everyday play. The children then retell the story using a story map (some children have already created their own story maps and stories linked to the texts) and at the end of the second week we work together to complete a shared writing task.

We have become keen spotters of repeating AB, ABB, AAB and even ABC repeating patterns! Today we have made delicious fruit kebabs, the children selected the fruit that they wanted in their pattern and confidently identified their pattern by saying "A is.... and B is....". The best part after creating our pattern was eating them!

]]><![CDATA[Marvellous Mark Making]]>Wed, 09 Oct 2024 00:00:00 GMThttps://www.athersleysouth-primary.co.uk/eyfs-blog/marvellous-mark-makingThe weather has made today a wonderful day for developing our large gross motor movements outside. 

We added some liquid soap to the puddles and we put our big muscles to work making the water turn into foamy soap by using sweeping brushes. The children noticed that if they added more water and moved their brush quickly, more foam and bubbles were created.  

The children then created marks using their fingers, small brushes, tools and the wheels on the trucks!
