In Key Stage One this week we have been leaning all about healthy choices and making fruit kebabs as part of 'Healthy Eating Week'. We first thought about a variety of foods and considered which were healthy and which were unhealthy choices. We then thought carefully about fruit and vegetables that we had identified as 'healthy choices.' How do we know which is a fruit and which is a vegetable? We looked carefully at each and tasted a variety. We came to the conclusion that fruits are usually sweeter than vegetables and that fruits have seeds, we catergorised each that we had tasted. After tasting lots of fruits we chose our favourite and designed and made (and most importantly ate) fruit kebabs. We loved talking to our friends and telling them which is our favourite and why, class one's most popular fruit was a strawberry. This half term we had to say goodbye to the fabulous Mrs Illingsworth. She has worked with us in class 1 all year and has been at Athersley south working in both KS1 and foundation stage for years before.
She will be greatly missed and we wish her all the best in her new job, we had a party and cake for her on her last day and will always remember her fondly. We miss you already Mrs Illingsworth The week before the school holidays KS1 have been getting arty! We have been creating lots of pirate themed work including; treasure maps, pirate treasure, making ourselves into pirates with our own pirate names and making our own feathery friends. We have based all of this around the book 'The Pirates Next Door' written by Jonny Duddle. The story takes place in a seaside town and pirates move in and cause chaos whilst fixing their broken ship. We really enjoyed reading about the adventures they had and the mischief they got into. We gave it 5 stars! We also wrote a message in a bottle back to a scurvy seadog called Jim Lad and designed and made a boat that would float to help the Jolly Rodger family, we really enjoyed testing and adapting them to make sure they worked. We had so much fun being creative and can't wait to see some of our hard work displayed when the KS2 children perform 'The Pirates of the Curry Bean.' ooohhh arrrr!! The caretaker was shocked to find a dragon in the school grounds before half term. He managed to take a photograph before it flew off. KS1 have been out investigating and looking for clues in the school grounds. We have been lucky enough to find a dragon egg! We feel honored to have been chosen to keep it safe. We are gathering information about dragons and their eggs and have also interviewed the caretaker (the eye witness). We will be creating a newspaper report about the incident and can't wait to share it with you. In the meantime, keep your eyes on the skies! |
