Nurse Booth Visited KS1

31/1/2023

Today dental nurse Steph Booth came to visit KS1 to talk about how they keep us safe from germs at the dentist.
We found out that they have to sterilise equipment in machines that heat up to over 200 degrees to kill the germs. We thought about how Florence Nightingale started the mission of making hospitals hygienic and clean all those years ago and it can still be seen today, her influence is still evident, her hard work and determination paid off!
Nurse Booth talked to us about the importance of brushing our teeth and visiting the dentist. She brought in some of the equipment used in her surgery for us to look at use.
We loved our special visitor and can't wait to brush our teeth tonight with all of our new skills!

When Florence Nightingale Came To Visit

24/1/2023

We were so lucky to have the 'real life Florence' come to visit us at Athersley South.
Our history topic this half term has been Florence Nightingale, we have enjoyed learning about this incredible lady and the the positive impact she had on nursing that can still be seen in todays hospitals.
Florence taught us the importance of kindness and compassion and saved so many lives by improving the hygiene and cleanliness in the hospitals in her time. She really was an incredible lady and we loved learning about her life from Florence herself!
We cared for injured soldiers after being taught by Florence the importance of talking to and listening to the soldiers. We acted out things that happened in Florence's life like the crowning of Queen Victoria and the start of the Victorian era, the invention of the steam train and the light bulb.
We even took a trip with Florence back to Scatari hospital to help to clean it up! We couldn't believe the awful smells and conditions, we even had to jump over and avoid rats! We are now Florence Nightigale experts and huge fans!
We were really inspired by Florence Nightingale's visit. We created lamps just like the one she used to watch over the injured soldiers at night. We decorated them with things that reminded us of Florence and the changes she made and the lives she saved.
We used our sketching skills to create intricate portraits of Florence Nightingale, we enjoyed using charcoal to make them look aged.
We also wrote thankyou letters to Florence, we had the most amazing time with her and couldn't wait to share our favourite facts we learnt from her. We'll never forget our special day with Florence, the day that history came to life.

Making Music Using Technology

19/1/2023

In KS1 we have been listening to a variety of music created by composers, we have discussed how music can make us feel different feelings and imagine different things.
We have been composing our own music using the 'chrome music lab program.' It is lots of fun and can't wait to try it at home and impress our adults too!

Let's Get Writing!

19/1/2023

In writing we are exploring instructions. We have looked at a variety of instructions and have created our own set and followed them! We made sure that we were clear and used lots of essential features like time conjunctions, imperative verbs and bullet points. We especially enjoyed 'getting bossy' using imperative verbs and really loved this song!
