We were feeling festive in FS2 so got busy decorating our tree and classroom for Christmas, doesn't it look fantastic?! In FS2 we have been using books and the internet to learn all about owls. On 1st December we had some very special visitors, Steve from Yorkshire Owl Experience brought his owls Charlie, Dusty, Jack, Amber and Casper. They were all different types of owl and Steve told us lots of facts about each of them and even showed us how their eggs are different. We were very lucky as Steve let us all stroke each owl and we got to hold Charlie the little owl. We all had a brilliant morning and learned a lot! Take a look at some of our pictures from the visit. We had a very exciting morning today, lots of us have been talking about the bonfires we went to at the weekend so we decided to have our own. Mrs Lee's is Forest School trained so she was the one who made the fire but there was lots we could do to help. First we talked about how to be safe around a fire and the grown ups put up a cordon to make sure we stayed a safe distance away. We then had to find sticks to make the fire with. We had to make sure they were dry by checking if they snapped and also not too big so we used our arms to measure them. When we had enough sticks Mrs Lees used them to make a fire along with some cotton wool and silver birch. She used a fire lighter to make a spark and then Miss Reynolds and Miss Pell brought these round the group so we could see the sparks being made. We learned that first we have to put things like cotton wool and small sticks on the fire as these burn quickly to start it, then bigger sticks can be added. Mrs Lees had to use a special fire glove to add the sticks to the fire. We also learned that a fire needs oxygen to stay lit. We all know that only the grown ups can light a fire and we must never try to do it ourselves. While the fire was lit we learned the song Campfire's Burning and sang it together. When the fire was finished Mrs Lees showed us that is was important that lots of water is put on it to make sure it is fully out. We really enjoyed our little bonfire and Mrs Lees said that the next time she makes one we can cook on it! As part of our work on similarities and differences we have been learning about lots of different ways people celebrate. One of the children in our class celebrates Diwali so we decided to find out all about it and hold our own celebration in school. We watched some videos, looked at pictures and also listened to our class member talk and we learned that Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights. During Diwali lots of people decorate their houses, make rangoli patterns, visit the Temple, get together with their families and eat lots of yummy food and share gifts. There are also lots of parades and firework displays going off. We had a go at making our own rangoli patterns, diva lamps and diwali sweets. We then had our own little celebration where we lit our candles, ate our sweets, listened to the story of Rama and Sita and watched some videos of fireworks. We really enjoyed all the activities and it was brilliant to be able to learn about the celebrations of one of our friends. The children who attended our Halloween party had a spooktacular time! We did lots of spooky dancing, played some spooky games and enjoyed eating monster fingers (hotdog) with a drink of witches brew (juice). We had a great time on Hello Yellow Mental Health Day. We all came dressed in something yellow and had lots of discussions about what makes us happy and what doesn't, that it's okay to feel down sometimes and what to do if we are feeling sad.
We have been learning how to independently use our self-service snack area. We know that when the green tick is on we can get ourselves some cereal. We have to check there is space, choose a bowl and then turn the dial one turn to get our cereal. We then pour our own milk, get a spoon and take a seat. While we enjoy eating it we can talk with our friends and look at the talking prompts to help us improve our speaking and communication skills. Afterwards, we need to scrape any leftovers into the bin and wash and dry our bowl and spoon ready for someone else to use. We are getting really good at doing all of this on our own!We were very excited to notice lots of ripe fruit on our trees in our grounds so decided to do some baking with it. We went out to collect some apples and plums to make crumble with, we talked carefully about how we knew which were ripe and which ones were good and bad. Once we had collected the fruit and washed it, we needed to cut it up. We talked about why it was important to wash our hands and how to use a knife safely. We then all had a go at using a knife to cut up the fruit under the supervision of a grown up. Miss Reynolds then cooked the fruit and weighed out the dry ingredients and we mixed them all together and put them on top of the fruit to make our crumble. This then went into the oven to cook. When it was ready Mrs Grange made some custard and we sat down to try it. Some of us loved it, but some of us weren't too keen, we talked about how this was okay as we all like different things but it was good that we had had a try. It has been a busy time for us in FS2 as we have been getting used to our new classroom and life in full time school. We have had lots of fun exploring our classroom and outdoor area, learning the routine of the day and making new friends. There have also been lots of firsts, such as our first time in the dinner hall, our first time in PE and our first assembly in the hall. We have all done brilliant and have taken everything in our stride, the grown ups in our class are very proud of us! Take a look at some of the pictures from our first weeks in school. This half term in FS2 we have been participating in a project run by the NHS called Jobs for Everyone. During these sessions we have been learning all about the different job roles within health and social care. We have learnt about lots of different jobs and can talk about what these people do, we even got to have a video call with some Physiotherapists! We have had some health and social care themed activities in the provision such as a hospital role-play area. We also learnt a song about different jobs and some of us were filmed singing this, we are sending the video to a local care home as we think it will make the residents there smile. At home some of us got creative and made models of different job roles and places you might find in health and social care. We have had lots of fun taking part in this project and now lots of us have aspirations to go on to do some of the jobs we have been learning about when we grow up! |
