As part of anti bullying week, we celebrated Odd Socks Day showing that we are all unique but all valued. We talked about how we should respect one another and our differences. We also talked about how if we see any signs of bullying or are worried about our friends we know who we can talk to in school and outside of school. Everyone was excited to see each other in odd socks. Yesterday we had two special visitors in school from the South Yorkshire Fire Service to talk to all children in year 3 about fire safety. It was really interesting and we learnt how to keep safe in the event of a fire. We also learnt about what the fire service do and found out that they also rescue people when they are in danger. When there is a fire we now know that we need to have an escape plan, especially if we are at home. It is really important to practise your fire escape plan so that you are prepared if a fire occurs at home. Fire is really dangerous. If our clothes catch fire we know that we should STOP, DROP and ROLL to put it out. Not only did we learn about fire, we also learnt about road and water safety. We know how to use roads carefully, wearing a helmet if we are out on our bikes and how to make a star with our bodies in the water if we get into difficulties. Take a look at our pictures. In science we have been learning how to make a circuit. We were able to make a circuit that worked to light a light bulb. We experimented with the circuit equipment to create different circuits. We then tried making lots of different circuits, it was really fun. In our maths session today, we made an angle maker and a right-angle checker. We discussed what an angle is. We discovered that we can turn the angle by a quarter, half, three quarters and a full turn. The amount of turn between the two arms the angle. We then made some small angle makers and found that when we made the same angle with the larger angle maker, the angles were still the same size. After that, we learnt about right angles and found the angle at a ‘square corner’ is called a right angle and is also a one-quarter turn. We made a right-angle check and investigated right angles in the environment and used the angle maker to help check the right angle. Look at how much fun we had! We went on a lovely trip to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and had a great time looking at all the different sculptures in the park and learning about the different artist that had created them. We visited a chapel with lights inside that were voice activated it was amazing. We had a walk around all the sculptures and then came back to the base for lunch. After that we go to go on a tour of the sculpture park with an artist called POI. She told us about each piece of art and gave us a sketch book to draw some of the sculptures. We were about to answer questions about the materials used and techniques to create them from the knowledge we had gained in our art lessons at school. Poi was impressed with our knowledge. What a super day we had. Take a look at our pictures of the day. We celebrated Anti Bullying week with wearing odd socks to show we are unique and we are united against bullying. we have completed lots of different activities to celebrate. We discussed the people we can speak to if we feel like we are getting bullied, witness bullying or need advice about it. As a school we all know that we have lots of trusted adults around us to speak to and at Athersley South we promise to 'Make a Noise' against bullying. Take a look at our pictures from the day of our children across school.
Getting Creative With ClayIn art this week we have had lots of fun manipulating clay to make a dragon eye. We were able to use the skills that we have been learning in art to bring our designs to life. We used a special cutter to create our dragon eye shape base and then carefully looked at our designs to then recreate this in clay. We learnt how to score the clay that we wanted to attach to the base and use water to help us to smooth the clay down to give it a nice finish. We used tools to help us create markings and cut out shapes to add to to our designs. We were able to add details such as a crest and scales using these techniques. We are really proud of how they have turned out and can't wait to paint them and add in the dragon eye!
Aayla has had some fantastic success at her gymnastics competition. She has won a medal in every colour and as well as gaining 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in different aspects of gymnastics she has also gained 2 4th ribbons to go with her collection! How fab is that?
Well done Aayla. What an achievement and all in ONE weekend. I am tired just thinking about it. Keep up the hard work Aayla, we are all proud of you in class 4! It has been a very busy week for us. We have visited Worsborough Mill, had a visit from a Roman and the HSBC bank all in one week! we all had such a fantastic time on our visit to the Mill. we learnt about how flour was made and watched the mill in operation. We also were about to do some activities such as growing our own wheat and looking at wheat grains under a microscope. We then went on a lovely walk around the park and has such a fantastic time. On Wednesday we had a Roman Day and had a special Visit from Ron the Roman. He came to talk to us about what life was like in Roman times and how to be a Roman soldier. We looked at a range of artefacts and Ron answered all our questions. After that, we played games that the Romans would have played and sketched some of the Roman artefacts. It was so cool! On Thursday we has a visit from the HSBC bank. As part of our PSHCE topic My Money. They helped us to understand household bills and the cost of living. It was very interesting and we now have a clearer understanding of where we get money from, how to use it and how to save it. Take a look at all the fun we have had this week! In class 4 we have been rather busy making and eating in our DT sessions. We have learnt about various fruits and vegetables, and when, where and why they are grown in different seasons and the relationship between colour and health benefits. Take a look at what we have created.
