Mad about Minibeasts and Birds

6/5/2021

Yesterday, the children loved exploring the garden looking for clues and finding minibeasts. We have discovered lots of things living in our garden such as woodlice, centipedes, ladybirds, worms and alder leaf beetles.  The children found lots of worms and this sparked lots questions - we used the internet to help find the answers.
We found out some very interesting facts about worms:
* They have no eyes
*They have tiny hairs but we cannot see them
*They have five hearts
*Worms can poo
*They like to live where it is dark and damp
*If they dry out they will die

We also found out we could make our very own wormery. The children listened, looked carefully and worked together to create their very own. If you would like to try and make a wormery please click here.

This afternoon some of the children enjoyed looking at our information book all about birds. Our information books showed pictures of the birds and what they liked to eat. The children used their binoculars to look out of the window... the children  were in luck... we spotted two Wood Pigeons, a Feral Pigeon and a Blackbird. We remembered the differences between a  Wood Pigeon and a Feral Pigeon - the Wood Pigeon has a white patch and the Feral Pigeon has green on it's neck.

We found out that most birds eat seeds, berries and nuts but others eat cereals and some bigger birds eat fish and frogs!

When we went outside the children collected sticks to make a nest for the birds. They remembered that birds make their nests need in high places to stay safe from cats and foxes that might be hungry.
