Whole Class Reading
We are really enjoying our whole class reading sessions.
Our favourite day is paired reading where we get to take it in turns to model wonderful reading and help each other out if we get stuck. I loved seeing how focused and encouraging you all were this week; keep up the amazing work everyone!
We read Adrian Mitchell's Poem- Back in the Playground Blues, in our whole class reading this week.
We rehearsed reading it aloud and then arranged the performance read by adding or removing voices to emphasise key words and messages.
We discussed the meaning and related it to our understanding of bullying and how to tackle it should we ever need to.

Wonderful maths work today for our Year 5s We were multiplying by 10 and 100 (which we have been finding tricky until today). Everyone worked so hard and explained their reasoning really well.

We have begun writing our diaries this week. We are writing as a child experiencing the Blitz during WW2. I cannot wait to read to finished published diaries because the drafts are looking amazing.

Code Breaking Challenge
Excellent teamwork and reasoning skills in our history lesson this week when we worked together to solve secret codes using a cypher wheel. It took quite a bit of perseverance and patience but we did a great job. We learnt about different codes and ways to send messages during WW2 and how mathematicians with great problem solving brains were vital to the war effort.
These two fabulous teams were so good at code breaking they even created their own code for each other to solve, and were super competitive to see who solved it first!
Air Raid in Athersley
It was quite surprising to hear the air raid siren go off (very loudly) in our classroom. We didn't panic, we sat squashed up under our desks and tried to imagine how it would have felt to be a child in WW2 and experience this for real.
We loved our science challenge today: which team could filter the VERY dirty water to make it as clear as possible? We put our filtering and teamwork skills to the test in this race against the clock investigation.
We loved making solutions in science. We predicted what would happen when a range of solids were mixed with water, observed the reactions carefully and then discussed our results.
We noticed that once the water had evaporated, some of the solutions were reversible.
