Welcome to Class 9

9/9/2024

ANCIENT EGYPT

Today was the launch of our new History Unit: Ancient Egypt.

We had a visitor in school who showed us some real artefacts that were from 3000 years ago. We also played games, took part in a quiz and learned about each stage of mummification and the afterlife.

We had the best time.

Take a look. :)
CRUCIAL CREW
Take a look at the year 6 children on their trip to Crucial Crew. We travelled to the LifeWise Centre, in Rotherham, where we completed 8 different scenarios. We learned how to keep safe in different situations and about of the consequences of breaking the law. We had the best day and these are the scenarios that we took part in:
  • Water safety
  • Fire safety
  • Knife Crime
  • Child Criminal Exploitation
  • Road Crossing
  • Travelling on a bus
  • Experiencing a real court room
  • Arson

In history, we are studying World War II. We started our first lesson by looking at the key events that happened between 1939 -1945. We researched these events using a range or sources and then placed these on a timeline.

WORLD BOOK DAY

Some of us came as book characters.
Some of us came in our PJs.
We completed a World Book Day Quiz.
All the teachers read their favourite book to a group of children.
We all had a biscuit and some hot chocolate whilst listening to our class book.

WE HAD A FAB DAY!

IT ALL STARTED WITH A BOOK.........

After reading the Boy at the Back of the Class, we loved the book so much that we completed two pieces of writing based on two of the characters (Ahmet and Alexa). We even published these online and tagged the author of the book in our post and SHE RESPONDED. However, it didn't stop there because we then found out that this was showing at Sheffield Lyceum and we REALLY wanted to attend. Therefore, we had to do a little fund-raising in order to pay for the coach and the tickets.

Soooooooo, we decided, as a year 6 cohort, that we would complete a sponsored run with a shared target of a 100 miles. We had 40 minutes to complete this in and even MRS SANDERSON took part!

We managed to run 104.25 miles as a combined total from all the year 6 children that completed it as well as 4.14 miles from Mrs Sanderson therefore we smashed our target. We also managed to raise a staggering £1708.25. We were blown away with how much money we managed to raise and were so proud of all the  year 6 children who completed the run. This was not an easy challenge and they were so resilient and determined to meet their target.

This meant on Thursday 7th March we were able to attend Sheffield Lyceum and watch The Boy at the Back of the Class. It was amazing! We really did have the best day and we would like to thank all our parents, families and friends who sponsored the children and made this trip possible. The remaining sponsor money that was not spent on the trip, will be spent on the year 6 children at the end of the year as a treat for all their hard work.

Take a look at our journey..
VIKINGS!!!!
Today we had a Viking Visitor. We had the best day. We played Viking board games, completed a quiz, looked at artefacts, looked at weaponry and reenacted the Battle of Hastings. We loved it.
MUSIC
This is our second year playing our brass instruments. Have a listen to our version of Last Christmas.
CRUCIAL CREW
Take a look at our visit to Crucial Crew in Rotherham. We all took part in a number of scenarios in order to keep us safe and to also understand the law. We had a great time and learnt lots at the same time.
DT - Textiles
In DT, this term, we have been designing, making and evaluating waistcoats. Take a look at our finished products.

CLASS 9's ASSEMBLY
On Friday morning, it was our class assembly. Take a look at some of the videos that we showed parents as well as a live performance of our synchronised swimming.

TT ROCKSTARS DAY with special appearances from Liam Gallagher and Freddie Mercury. We all had a fab day with lots of times table practise and a few rock songs in between all our hard work :)

CRUCIAL CREW

All Year 6 children attended Crucial Crew at the Lifewise Centre in Rotherham. We had the best day and learned so much. We took part in eight different scenarios and these were:
- Home/Fire Safety
- Court Room/Prison Cell
- Child Criminal Exploitation
- Water Safety
- Road Safety
- Hate Crime
- Travelling Safely on a Bus
- Arson

Take a look at the photos from our day ay Crucial Crew.

THE DAY THE CHAIRS WENT ON STRIKE!!!!!!!

Y5/6 Christmas Assembly
These are a few photos of the Y5/6 children performing their Xmas Concert. Each class had to perform something festive and Class 9 decided to create some Festive TikToks. Take a look.

Writing
As Halloween is approaching, class 9 watched the film Hocus Pocus and were given the task to chose one of the three Sanderson Sisters (Winnie, Mary or Sarah) and write a detailed character description on the witch they had chosen. Below are three examples of each witch. Take a look and try and guess WHICH WITCH IS WHICH.

It's all a bunch of HOCUS POCUS.
SCIENCE - PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS

In science, we have been learning about properties of materials and for one of our experiments, we focused on filtration. The children were given a mixture of mud and water and a range of equipment. Their task was to see if they could separate the mud and water and decide whether this was a reversible or irreversible change. Take a look.
EDEN CAMP - WWII
On Friday, all Y5/6 went to Eden Camp as part of our WWII History Topic. We had the best day (apart from the rain). Take a look at some of our photos from our amazing school trip.
HISTORY - WORLD WAR II
This half term, in our history unit, we have been studying WW2. We are absolutely loving it and learning lots. We were given key events from  1939 -1945 and we had to research what year these events happened and create our own timeline.  We also had the opportunity to look at a real gas mask (from WW2). Take a look.

The Mayor's Visit
In years 5 and 6, we were lucky enough to receive a visit from the Mayor of Barnsley (Cllr Caroline Makinson) who visited us to award some of our Year 6 children with certificates for a competition that they entered last year. The competition was for children to draw their Key Worker heroes from the Pandemic. The winning entries were then created into a Bronze Relief which has formed part of the Covid Memorial Sculpture and can be seen in Barnsley Town Centre. The five children who also entered, but didn't win were also awarded a certificate. Well done everyone!

Whilst the Mayor was here, we also asked if she could present our Learners of the Week certificates which she was more than happy to do.
